PinePhone Arrived Today!
By - pegasusandme
Whew, finally got around to unboxing. Showed up while I was finishing up my work day and some web meetings. So, first thing on powering it up: It came loaded with PostMarketOS instead of Manjaro.
I don't totally mind, because I was not likely to hang on to the stock distro anyway, but found it interesting, especially with all the Manjaro branding all over the box and even on the back of the phone itself.
Going through some setup now and will see what I can get it to do :)
Alright, so the battery charge out of the box wasn't really enough to even figure out how to get connected to wifi, etc, so I'll have to charge it up now and see what we can get once there's enough juice.
So far, the experience is somewhat "meh" just getting something that is different than advertised. I need to get it a full test/review to be fair though. More to come once I spend some more time with it!
Heh, so the charging was totally an RTFM moment where I completely disregarded the instructions on opening the back panel and removing the plastic tab blocking the battery connection.
Makes me wonder how it even powered on in the first place before doing that though? I got through the whole first time login process before that created any issues. Regardless, good to go now :)
Sounds like a good Twilight Zone episode.
Somebody forgot to *zap the PRAM* before shipping, maybe. That's an old Mac joke, sorry.
Do you mind giving an ELI5 explanation?
When I started in tech support during college in the '90s, the hail mary pass if running out of options to fix a problem on a PowerMac or PPC clone was to suggest *zapping the PRAM*. Similar to resetting the NVRAM nowadays. It was a running joke within our IBM/Advantis Global Internet Services team circa 1997 because it never solved a dial-up connection issue (or anything, really).
Interesting, Either that tab wasn't doing its job properly or pine phones ship with an internal secondary battery. keep us updated.
The real test is whether you can install another OS on it without significant issues.
There is no internal secondary battery.
You have accidentally discovered their hidden secondary battery!
Be aware that all that privacy shit is scam!!
All of your data is already transmitted as soon as you tried to start it!!!
Keep lights on always and sleep under the bed!!!!
wtf, that should not be possible.
Some circuits contain enough capacitors to stay on for a few seconds, but not enough to power on the whole way...plus with a smaller device like a phone that seems way less likely.
Maybe there really is a hidden internal battery?
2spooky 4 2day
PMOS on manjaro edition is certainly unexpected.
With the postmarketOS edition you most probably got an older version of the hardware with some nasty bugs regarding docking...
I thought that was just the UBPorts/Braveheart versions.
Sorry but your thoughts are plain wrong.
This link says that the bug was present in the UBPorts Community Edition and fixed in hardware revision 1.2 (pmOS edition):
Is there anything else I'm missing here?
I could never use this as my daily driver because I would mess with it so much it would always be in q state of half working
Personally I just have too many mobile games with play store integration and I'm not willing to downgrade hardware. The phones are neat though. I'd probably buy a tablet or something like that if they made it
Still waiting for the new pre-command batch. I will so buy one.
Any ideea about when will it be available again?
Nope.... Maybe after they have shipped every tablets from the first batch.
There's an panel shortage or something like that. I think preorders are suppose to open again before the end of the year for the Pinetab and Pinebook Pro.
Ok, getting some traction! Still running PMOS for now. I got sshd running and connected in from my Thinkpad while it's charging. The default account it prompted me to create when enabling SSH had sudo access, so I was able to sudo su and change the root passwd.
It's Alpine under the hood, so already familiar with adding packages with apk and managing services with openrc.
I actually kind of like the idea of pushing this a bit before hunting for a Manjaro image that was meant for this device. I've done full blown Alpine desktops in VMs just to prove it out, but haven't gotten around to hardware yet. This'll be a nice little test run to see how the musl muscle performs :)
So far, only gripe is Gnome Mobile defaulting to super boring theming... I'm not a KDE guy (haven't been since the 3.x days) but was actually kind of looking forward to trying out Plasma Mobile. We'll get there.
> So far, only gripe is Gnome Mobile defaulting to super boring theming... I'm not a KDE guy (haven't been since the 3.x days) but was actually kind of looking forward to trying out Plasma Mobile. We'll get there.
You can just switch to Plasma Mobile you know. At least on postmarketOS it's just:
sudo apk del postmarketos-ui-phosh && sudo apk add postmarketos-ui-plasma-mobile && sudo rc-service lightdm restart
And of course you can do a clean install with it too, that will make sure you get the proper apps with it.
pmbootstrap is awesome, you can build a flashable image with any desktop you want, and it handles FDE setup too.
How is it ?
Maybe I'm gonna get one of these
So far, just getting through the unboxing. Nicely put together and came with the convergence kit to dock it with a monitor, etc. I'll reply back once I have it fully powered up :)
Is it powered up yet!? /s
Oh now we're getting somewhere! Powered up, connected to wifi, and totally have remote terminal access to it. Convergence dock connected keyboard and mouse immediately, but still figuring out how to extend the display.
You don't want Dave to be sad, do you?
Don't make Dave cry; take it apart.
also is it good enough to use as a main phone or do you think it still needs some work?
Haven't quite gotten a fair review just yet and actually purchased more for mobile computing/docking with the convergence kit that came with it.
I'll definitely put a SIM in it later and test that out though :)
I use mine as my main phone (running postmarketOS Edge), although it's definitely not anywhere near ready for most people, if you aren't too picky it definitely works.
I was looking to make the jump. Can you provide a little more detail on what it lacks?
1. Incoming calls don't ring when the phone is suspended (but do show up as missed).
2. Depending on what apps you use, you may be stuck either having to use alternatives or not using them at all. Personally I mostly used Telegram and Firefox on Android and both of those are available here, so I'm good.
3. Battery life was an issue before, but since suspend got fixed in postmarketOS battery life is pretty reasonable.
4. No push notifications from anything other than SMS (and calls, sort of).
5. Freezes are common still (but not super common).
6. Camera is not great. Will probably get better with software updates, but I doubt it'll ever be particularly good on the PinePhone.
7. Phosh lacks a lot of polish (but it's definitely usable).
8. KDE Connect doesn't play well with suspend.
Some things that aren't issues that I would like to mention:
1. KTrip is a great app for finding timetables of public transportation. Doesn't work everywhere, but it does work where I live and it's great (apart from the UI design).
2. In my experience, postmarketOS Edge is a much better experience for most purposes than postmarketOS Stable at the moment. This will probably change soon enough when most important fixes have landed in stable though.
I think the only real deal-breaker for me would be 1, and maybe 5.
Thanks for the run-down. It's really helped me out.
1 should be getting resolved relatively soon (maybe in time the next batch ships), 5 would probably take more time since there is more than one issue that causes this.
> Thanks for the run-down. It's really helped me out.
Glad to hear!
r/linuxmobile stuff, nice
I really want one of these.
These look sweet. I really like that short-run Ubuntu Touch phone that is on Kickstarter.
Complete with requisite fedora!
Haha, yep! I even have Fedora running on that Thinkpad behind the phone ;)
Welcome to the family.
Nice! Your post had me check if mine was on the way, and it is! :D
Heck yeah! Mine showed up about a week earlier than expected, so I wasn't even mentally prepared for its arrival today, lol.
Mine just shipped the other day. How long did it take to arrive after they shipped it?
Real fast. Arrived today and shipping notification was on the 27th. Can’t remember if I ordered expedited shipping.
Are you in the states?
You must have done expedited shipping. Mine shipped 2 days ago and it just left China today.
i feel so limited on android phones.. cant deploy docker natively without emulation (qemu/kvm). I really don't like to work behind a layer.
Can you make phone calls?
Still a pending test. Need to get a SIM for it. It actually showed up about a week earlier than expected.
I made calls and did texts with PostmarketOS, Ubuntu Touch and Arch Linux ARM. I've settled on ALARM since it offers best battery life and my other machines are running Arch as well so that uniformity is a nice extra.
ALARM and pmOS both use Phosh, so it doesn't really look that different. Ubuntu Touch looks the nicest.
Phone calls have worked since the launch of the first version, braveheart.
How does that work with your cellular provider though? Did you have to get another phone line or something?
? I simply switched my sim over to it
Oh ok thanks so if you want to use your old phone then ypu just switch the sim card back into it?
I don't own the pinephone, but i guess that's kinda obvious, unless your phone has e-sim you will need to get the sim card in whatever phone you want to use it on
yes, but the pinephone already works well enough that i have no need to do so. Only situation it would be necessary is if i need a phone for many days without ability to charge it.
Only a few happy were able to use it as a phone...
Is the issue between different standards used by different operators, or ?
It is much more complicated.
But the phone definitely does not wake up from sleeping mode when receiving a call....
This is true for my ALARM PinePhone.
This is a phone that I would really like to try as well, but the main drawbacks, for me, are the cameras, whose resolution isn't that great (my current phone has 13MP and 8MP cameras, is 3y old, and didn't cost much more that the pinephone) and the display, which isn't 1080p.
If I ever find a Linux phone with at least the specifications of the pinephone 64 + good camera and display, that doesn't doesn't cost more than €300 (yupp, Librem 5 costs way too much for me), I would definitely buy it! :)
(But maybe I'm describing a unicorn :P)
I'm not looking for a flagship or anything but if the specs were just a little bit better this would be way more enticing. 2GB RAM right now is way too low. I know there's one with 3 also but 4 should really be the minimum nowadays.
I mean, it's not an Android phone.
Reminds me of Apple fan's excuses when Macs first started out with soldered RAM, "well they're running MacOS so you don't have to upgrade the RAM".
Hardware is hardware. My phone from 5 years ago had 2 GB RAM (Nexus 5X), and it wasn't even good back then.
I think you're getting ahead of the current state. This is a development platform aimed at a pricepoint that gets it into as many interested hands as possible, and most of the accessories are pretty much there for proof of concept.
Pine has hinted at a V2 that will come in with better specs at a midrange price but very little has been said about it and it won't be soon.
I'd love to see modular PinePhone. There was a concept for such phones already.
How long took to arrive?
Ordered in September and shipping notification came 3 days ago. Arrived today so pretty fast.
nice, I am planning to buy one too but I am waiting for the version with a keyboard.
Would you do a review later ? Like, is it something you can use, what's missing comparing to android, what usage can you make of it, etc etc.
Sweet! Mine is scheduled to be delivered on Tuesday. Was a little surprised to see yours did t have Manjaro installed lol. How hard is it to install?
I actually haven’t done it yet. Having fun for now with PMOS which is actually something I was interested in anyway after discovering Alpine earlier this year.
What's the Pine Phone?
It's a smartphone that runs linux
I. NEED. THIS
There is no keyboard, so what's the point?
It may get one tho. [As a cover](https://tuxphones.com/pinephone-cover-qwerty-external-keyboard-wireless-qi-charging-nfc-5000mah-battery/)
That changes everything, yes :)
I was looking at this: [https://www.fxtec.com](https://www.fxtec.com/)
Freedom and hackability. Also, you can dock it with USB-C to get a desktop environment.
Uh no PinePhone for serbia, i would buy jt 100%
maybe the Pro1 X ships to Serbia? https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/pro1-x-smartphone-functionality-choice-control
I'm about to check it out
The dock has a single HDMI port but does have usb c pass through. I’ll have to get an adapter and test that out! Would be cool if it had the juice for it but I imagine the GPU would struggle at higher res on more than one screen.
I got excited and made the comment, but [heres a video that compares it to the gpu on the raspi4b which can run dual monitors at 4k](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43f5NLovSKA). I'm curious as to what happens with your test tho. idk a ton about graphics, but based on the comparison I'd have to assume its good for 2x1080, if its wired for it.
I'm getting deep on their site and quickly becoming a huge fan. Is the phone really $200!? I might have to grab one tomorrow. Not to mention all the other cool shit, thanks for the post!
EDIT: grabbed one today
Nice! Yeah, $200 with the convergence kit (or $150 without it) is a sweet deal considering what you pay for a Pi4 Canakit or similar. Even it's it current state, it's at least mobile, convertible, and capable of phone calls and SMS.
And opening the case and modding is encouraged. Gotta love that. Will be interesting to see what cool accessories/mods end up getting realized by the Pine64 team as the project evolves.
It's a picture of a box.
That's reddit these days. Fucking 700 upvotes for a picture of a shrinkwrapped box. Not a how-to serial console the thing. Not tech info about it's MTD layout. Just a fucking box.
It's not about the damn picture of the box. I upvoted because OP is giving us his first impressions of the pine phone.
He gives basically zero information, based on zero actual usage, considering that it is just a stupid unboxing like morons on Youtube do. And it is not even present in the post but in random comments.
During the last months, because this is not even something new and many thousands of Pinephones have already been shipped, dozens of people have already written a lot about their Pinephone, on Reddit and elsewhere. Good, bad experiences. Descriptions. Troubles. Solutions. Informations. Tests. Actual content, you know.
It was just a conversation starter. And it worked. Many of us engaged in a fun conversation.
People liked it and it’s ok for people to like whatever they want.
You might have issues you should address with your counselor if imaginary internet points bother you so much.
My apologies, I will put more thought into my upvotes next time.
What a faint and superficial impression...
Also Reddit: people complaining about everything.
imagine being that upset about someone getting internet points lmao
Reddit: Upvotes = Value.
Its a ticker my dude, not cash why this obsession with Karma?
Upvotes look like value, but are really worthless...
Yeah and it makes no sense. I saw a comment like "karma whoring" etc and I think - what a world that person must live in, thinking that everyone see the same absurd make-belief benefit in what point their posts have on reddit?
> Fucking 700 upvotes for a picture of a shrinkwrapped box.
> That's reddit these days.
At least, this is indeed the turn that this sub has definitely taken, for... something like 1 year, maybe.
Nice sonic plush! Also, nice phone! :)
Haha, was waiting for someone to call it out :D
Oh man, I wish! I would have been about 11 or 12 when Sonic was born and probably still have the first two cartridges somewhere.
I snagged this one as a prize for a work offsite event about 5 years ago and ended up winning it back myself :D
Super Street Fighter 2? A man of culture I see
You know it! We play competitively out here in Seattle. Can’t wait for in person events to resume 😎
Did you get the expedited shipping? I preordered the convergence package with slow shipping to Seattle, and mine is still in Hong Kong
Yeah can’t remember if I did that intentionally. I wasn’t in a rush but I do have a $25 line item for shipping on the receipt. Only took 3 days after getting the shipping notification email.
I’m also in the Seattle area.

Can there not be community subs besides official ones? Nuking mention of them seems a bit sketch
The problem wasn't that it wasn't official, its that the sub claimed to be official and lied to a bunch of users. Check out lukasz's posts about it, there were a bunch of otherproblems with the sub which is why there are efforts to discourage people from it.
That would have been good to know from the automod instead of "this isn't the official one so we're cancelling it"
Edit: I'm stupid it said that
I think it would be better as a warning though, I'm always against banning things. Its already causing people to get mad, a warning would have had a much better effect.
There sure can, but what there shouldn't be are subs falsely purporting to represent the official company brand.
The subreddit owner also begged for donations to his bitcoin wallet. I can't remember if he said that money will go to pinephone development (which is obviously a lie) but either way, it isn't a good look when the mods are begging for money.
For real, I get that you would warn about it, but it's not like whoever is reading the comment can't make a conscious decision as to wether or not visit the subreddit.
>but it's not like whoever is reading the comment can't make a conscious decision
Wrong. Only they can make your decisions. Or as Metallica so clearly stated in the 80's and what became our moral overlords motto.
*"You can do it your own way*
*If it’s done just how I say"*
This is /r/linux. You get nuked if you think Azure is real. This is pretty small compared to that.
You missed the events which occurred on this sub, some people impersonated Pine64 Official and were attempting to divert traffic away from legitimate information about pinephone. The not actually explained it quite well. Read some above comments for more context and you can dig in to it yourself
Mine is still in Hong Kong according to DHL. Only been a few days though.
$199 USD - totally worth the hacky experiment 🙂
When did you order? Been waiting a while for mine to show up.
Mid September but it looks like I opted for expedited shipping.
expedited shipping might be where I messed up. Thanks!
I've been thinking about getting one to run kali nethunter. Does anyone know if the NIC supports monitor mode and injection?
I like how it comes with a Vibrator.
Check the product specifications...
That is not the right word for a rumble motot
oh man im so jealous..
i want to buy one asap but i can't stand lcd screens.. they need to make a phone with an eink screen like yotaphone.
